Core Loop & Gameplay Outline

What is a Core Gameplay Loop?
- The repeated cycle of actions the player performs.
- Usually: Action β Feedback β Reward β Repeat.
- Example: In a platformer β Jump β Land β Collect Coin β Keep Moving.
Types of Loops:
- Primary Loop β the short repeatable actions (movement, combat, gathering).
- Secondary Loop β mid-length goals (quests, puzzles, missions).
- Meta Loop β long-term progression (leveling up, story arcs).
Why Core Loops Matter:
- Defines the βfunβ of the game.
- Keeps players engaged.
- Shapes the scope of the vertical slice.
Scope Reminder:
- For this project, focus on the Primary Loop.
- The Alpha must have one clear loop that can be repeated.
Gameplay Outline Tips:
- Write steps like instructions a player could follow.
- Include what happens, what feedback is given, and what rewards exist.
- Keep it short, clear, and focused.
π οΈ Workshop Goals
Workshop 1
- Review your narrative pitch from Assignment 1.1.
- Brainstorm what the player will do repeatedly in your slice.
- Write a draft Primary Loop in 3β5 steps.
- Share with peers, revise for clarity.
Workshop 2
- Expand the loop into a short Gameplay Outline (1 page max).
- Include: actions, feedback, rewards, and how it connects to the narrative.
- Create a simple diagram or flow (arrows, boxes, or bulleted steps).
- Upload draft outline + diagram to Canvas / portfolio.
If you finish early:
- Add a βSecondary Loopβ (like puzzles, missions, or challenges).
- List 2β3 possible fail states (how the player could lose).

- Gameplay Outline Document (1 page)
- Simple Loop Diagram (boxes, arrows, or flowchart style)
